The Yesanpo National Geographical Park, or Yesanpo (Chinese, 野三坡), literally Three Natural Slopes, is a beautiful nature reserve, located in Laishui County, Hebei Province, about 75 miles southwest of Beijing. Over the centuries, it has been widely known as a “Paradise on Earth” because of its spectacular natural landscape and relics of ancient historic interests.
Yesanpo derives its name from its three topographical divisions: the easily recognizable upper, middle and lower with the North-West slowly rising and the South-East slowly sinking. The reserve is tucked amongst layers of mountainous ranges marked with dramatic cliffs and karst caves. It also contains numerous sandalwood trees with some of them believed to be more than 1,000 years old. In addition to beautiful scenery, the valley is also home to wide range of wildlife. Visitors will also see a few Buddhist temples housing some the key figures in the Buddhist religion.
Yesanpo contains three major landscape areas: Baili Canyon (百里峡), Long-Men-Tian-Guan (龙门天关), and Fish Valley Cave (鱼谷洞).
Baili Canyon, located at Gougezhuang Village, Yesanpo Town, is one unique scenery of Yesanpo. Covering an area of about 110 square kilometers, it is a long, narrow streak of water-washed valley, precipitous, miraculous, and deeply serene. There are a a great many streams, little waterfalls and wild flowers in the mountainside here and there. Visitors are always finding themselves in a wonderland where hills bend, streams wind and the pathway seems to end, but always the dark willows and flowers in bloom would suggest another village should be over there. Known today as “the first canyon in the world”, it is a shining pearl of the tour spots in Yesanpo area.
Long-Men-Tian-Guan is an important military pass on the Great Wall built during Ming Dynasty (1368—1644), connecting the Capital city with other far-off lands near the northwest borders in ancient times. It is surrounded by the Xiao-Xi-He (小溪河), a tributary of Ju-Ma-He (拒马河), on all sides except that the mountain area lies to its southwest.
Fish Valley Cave, or Yu-Gu-Dong (鱼谷洞), is a karst-topographical cave, greatly mystical and truly abysmal. At the center of the area, it comprises Yu-Gu-Dong Cavern and Yu-Gu-Dong Spring, the former being 1,500m in length, 10m in width, and 0.5 to 20m in height, the latter thus named for the out-flowing little fish from its mouths. It's famed as one of the world’s 8 most fascinating springs.
Yesanpo is within the semi aridity area, east monsoon temperate zone. Summer is relatively cool with the average temperature in mountain areas lower by 1~3℃ than that in the lowlands, and annual rainfall is more by 50~150.
